Intruders?

So no soon as I'd settled down back home in Aberdeen than Gail was loading up the car again and I quickly deduced from the bags she'd packed that we were heading off to the Torridon cottage.

Well you can imagine how, after the long drive back from Nottingham then another drive from east to west coast of Scotland, on arrival in Torridon I leapt out of the car like a coiled spring, raring to be off on an energetic romp in the hills.

Picture my consternation then, to find the cottage occupied by intruders.

I was on the brink of deploying my terrier jaw to good effect when it became clear that these two were not in fact intruders, rather they were yet more friends of Gail's - Steve (ex-boyfriend from pre-historic times) and his wife Drusilla. And I was instructed to stop trying to shred Dru's pullover and sit patiently while the humans talked and talked and talked.

Sigh.

By morning, I was prepared to "pose nicely" with the guests (I am always calmer in the morning).

A couple of hours later they departed and, finally, Gail dug out her walking boots and asked me if I felt up to the hike described below (text taken from the Walkhighlands website).

Diabaig Coastal Circuit

A challenging coastal walk through spectacularly rugged and rocky scenery. The return route involves some road walking but the views are ample reward.

There is a path throughout, but it is rough and rocky and traverses steep ground in places and can be overgrown with bracken in the summer. This is a tougher walk than might be expected from the map - a real adventure.

She told me that my predecessor Bouncing Bertie had been scared at having to traverse big boulders on one particularly precipitous section of this walk but she assumed I would be up for the challenge.

Readers, tell me, was I ever in my life frightened or intimidated by a new adventure?

I think by now you know me well enough to guess the answer...

The perfect host?

We have two lovely ladies from the USA staying with us in Aberdeen right now. I am thinking that my canine pals might appreciate some tips on how to look after visitors from overseas.

I believe guests will always enjoy kisses and licks on their face while sipping their early morning coffee.

Then a trip up Royal Deeside to Balmoral Castle is of course a must, especially if the visitors are American. It is however a bit embarrassing if one's (English) owner consistently shows her ignorance when she is bombarded with questions about the British monarchy...

Back in Aberdeen, even the hardest working tour guide will deserve a break to play with canine friends down at the harbour mouth.
(I am thinking that my later ball-stealing antics  at the beach - sadly unrecorded on camera - provided a highlight unmatched by all other tourist entertainments available in the Granite City. Imagine, I kept our friends amused for a whole twenty minutes while I evaded capture and refused to return my prize to its rightful owner...)

Oh and one more thing. Your guests will surely be thrilled if you insist they accompany you to your beginners' agility class and you make them stand around in a field for an hour swatting away the midges while they video the finer points of your performance.

Yes, I really think I've cracked this 'perfect host' business, don't you agree?

Socialisation programme going great guns

Well it's a good thing that Gail has me around to tidy up the kitchen floor (see Friday's post) as we've had a series of visitors over the past few days, all eager to make my acquaintance.

According to a rather intimidating chart* Gail was given when she took me to the vet for my first set of vaccinations last week (I was a Good Boy, by the way), I am supposed to develop my social skills by meeting the following types of people over the next few weeks.

I asked Gail to tick the relevant boxes for those whom I've now met, but she says some of her friends might read this blog and get upset about how they were classified.  (Middle aged? Elderly?)

One of the friends took these pictures of Gail and me. I totally wasn't showing off. I am Nice Nobby, always!

Oh and I'm told my readers will know whom to blame for the bags under Gail's eyes...

*Gail says: this chart actually has thirteen categories of experiences Nobby is supposed to encounter as part of his 'Weekly Socialisation Programme', of which 'meetings with people' is just one. (Although, given that this is 2022, I find it a serious omission that the chart neglects to list 'developing a social media presence'!)
