The path less travelled

Little did I know what was in store on Saturday morning when Gail and I set off into the woods near Finzean with our friends M and J.

This intrepid couple (and perfect team) might just have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary, but their taste for adventure is undimmed.

I had assumed we would stick to the main forest tracks, but no, our friends were all for exploring uncharted territory.

With the path alternating between indistinct and non-existent, I heroically help scout a route through the dense undergrowth.

Crucial decisions were required on how best to navigate the many obstacles along the way.

As we penetrated deeper into the forest, hunger set in and I kept a lookout for wolves* while M and J foraged for energy-boosting sustenance..

There was a pause to 'regroup' before making the difficult decision to turn around and  push back to the car park.

It was touch and go, but we made it just in time!

(Just in time, that is, to reach the nearby Finzean Farm Shop where the humans had reserved a table for lunch at 1:30 pm.....)

*Gail would like to point out that wolves have actually been extinct in the wild in Scotland for several hundred years.

Well, Nobby, colour me a tad jelly green. I recall many happy summers with the family in such environs and my father teaching us about blaeberry foraging and mushrooms and beechnuts... I am glad you were there to scout the territory for your aging but unwilted and adventurous companions!!! Good job, lad. Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx

  4. Now you can add to your resume, True Adventurer. I would not be able to do what you all did, a path is necessary, but i would if I could. Nice to see a post after reading the comment about M and Hamish the unsere Wecker. smart dog. Beau is the best clock dog of our 6 we have had in 38 years. they all had clocks but his is the best. if we do something a 3rd time at the same time, it is locked in his brain

  6. Nobby M&J are an inspiration to all of us who are young at heart and mind in spite of our pieces and parts sometimes needing a rest. YAY for them.
You can never EVER no NEVER let your guard down while running about in the wild Scottish woods. Maybe no wolves but OMDS scents galore and maybe a wabbit
    Hugs Cecilia and Bryan.
PS The foodies in us want to know what the humans had for lunch!!

    1. M and J both had soup (pea, basil and courgette) and a fancy sausage roll. Gail had a mozarrella, tomato and pesto panini with salad. Drinks were ginger beers and afterwards espressos.

  8. Wolves! Oh, my goodness, I was so glad to read Gail's footnote! I think even for a brave little chap like you it would have been difficult to protect your entire flock!
You really have had some super adventures already Nobby - what's next I wonder?

    Love,
    Inca xx

  14. That was a great dogventure, and you did a great job of leading your group through the uncharted ways, and then brought them back to civilization; not sure if we could do that!
