One down, four to go...

I'm really hoping my owner has learned the error of her ways.

You'll be shocked (or perhaps not) to learn that when staying with YAM-aunty last week, Gail was so absorbed in watching the Tour de France on TV one evening she ignored clear signals that I needed to go outside and the result was a 'wee' puddle on the living room carpet.

You would hope this mortifying incident might dampen Gail's enthusiasm for all things bicycle-related.

And guess what? Result! Shortly after we returned home to Aberdeen earlier this week, a friendly woman and a very sweet teenage girl called Marta turned up at our house, and Gail handed over one of her bicycles.

Marta, who spoke excellent English although I'm told she comes from Ukraine, seemed genuinely thrilled with this gift and, after a small adjustment to the saddle height, she went on a short test ride up the street and then took the bike away to her temporary home here in the city.

Right, that's one bicycle gone, four more (including a rarely used one rusting away in Torridon) to go.

PS from Gail: We have a few hundred Ukrainians recently arrived here in Aberdeen and recently a plea went out to all the local cycling groups for bicycles that might be of use to the refugees. I was delighted to be able to help someone whose life has been turned upside down by this terrible war in a small but practical way. I hadn't been expecting to meet the recipient of the bike - that was a lovely bonus.

PPS from Gail: It later occurred to me there were echoes here of my mother's experience as a 'war guest' (i.e. an evacuee) in Toronto from 1940-44, when she stayed with a kind and generous family who provided her with a bicycle and much else besides.

  2. Gail, Your post made me smile... what a great use of one of your unused bikes and so nice that you got to meet the new owner. Has Nobby been a pillion passenger on one if your bike rides yet or does he need to wait until he is older to experience the joy of being on a bike?

  3. It's so good to hear that one of Gail's bikes has found a new lease of life and will help someone from the Ukraine settle down in Aberdeen. May Marta have many safe and happy hours exploring.
Some people do get very involved when their favourite sport is on TV. Fortunately, my human isn't a sports enthusiast, so I don't have problems communicating my needs to her.

  4. Nobby - F's brother (in NZ) is a volunteer with refugee groups. A local service group (like Rotary or Lions or something) put out an appeal for bicycles, and F-Bro offered to repair, renovate, store etc whatever they collected. He now has over 300 bicycles in a shed and in addition to supplying ready-to-ride bicycles, he now builds specialty cycles out of parts from some of the less well maintained items in the collection. Tridem anyone?

Well, Nobby - to be honest, you'd never know there had been any such occurrence for, as Angus points out, drying was no problem. Pawtikuyoularly as the position was ideal for receiving the northerly blast through the window! As for the bikes, I wouldn't hold your breath on the getting rid of four angle!!! Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx

Gail - how delightful to meet Marta and know the bike was exactly as she needed... and had I not left commenting and returned later, I would have missed your PPS with picture of mum on hers! Double delight. Yxx

  8. I know you made Marta so very happy, and kudos for donating the bike, and also to F's brother for all he is doing. our world needs more people doing these good deeds. Nobby, I agree with all the other comments, the tiny wee was no big deal and you are safe to go for the next trip to the hutch. about getting attention when your human is not paying attention. this is what Beau does. If I am focused on TV he stands in my face and STARES, if that is ignored, he puts a five poun paw on my lap, next a 20 lb head goes in the lap, still being ignored he stands up on my lap to put his face in my face and I yelp in pain from 81 lbs of dog on my lap and get up and open the door. it is much simpler if human is on the computer. the head flops on the keyboard.

  9. Nobby someone here is glued to the Tour de France tvees too. AND we have a 10 speed bike in our shed that is older than dirt. KUDOS to GAIL for her kindness she indeed paid it forward in memory of HGma. I love that photo of her too. Maybe Gail can put (NOT) a Nobby basket on one of the remaining bikes so you 2 could have a Tour Da Aberdeen

  10. What a great thing Gail did to donate her bike to Marta. We think it will be a long time before Gail gives up all her bikes though, Nobby.

  16. We are sure Aunty Yam was quite understanding, Nobby. We hope she didn't reprimand Gail too much:). And what a kind and loving thing to do for that young girl! Receiving that bicycle will be a cherished memory of the child's for years to come just Gail's mother's was.
