Designated Dog Day

Gail says that Tuesday is now 'Designated Dog Day'.

Are you thinking what I'm thinking? That surely every day in the Gail and Nobby household should be Designated Dog Day?

Well it seems it's just Tuesdays.

First off, of course, I get my morning walk in Duthie Park. But you know all about that.

Then something new. Our neighbour Jim is not very well, and Angus, Jim's handsome black labrador, needs more exercise. So Gail has offered to take Angus out for a good leg stretch on Tuesday afternoons.

I have high hopes that eventually I might be allowed to join Gail and Angus on these outings, but based on this week's evidence, it is perhaps better that Gail gets used to walking a lively plus 40 kg dog by herself to start with.

From my perch on the sofa in our bay window, I was able to observe Angus exiting our neighbour's front gate and heading down the street at pace, thus unbalancing Gail so she toppled over and let go of the lead. Angus, being a Good Boy, calmly waited for her to pick herself up and they proceeded on their walk, Gail this time remembering to hold on tight and engage her core muscles in an effort to stay upright while Angus dragged her off in the direction of the riverside path.

The photo of Angus, below, was taken later, by which time Gail claims she had somewhat regained control of the situation. Apparently, she attributes her earlier fall to momentarily forgetting she was not walking a 9 kg dog who does not generally pull on his lead these days. (That would be me.)

The third and final component of Designated Dog Day is my weekly training session at Deeside Dog Agility Club. This week it was raining so we were indoors in the barn. To be honest, this is not so much fun as being out in the open - less scope for haring across the field and eliciting cries of "LOOSE DOG!"

Gail says, with the onset of dark evenings and colder weather, we will likely now be inside for agility until the spring so I'd better get used to it!

  1. that is a good idea, to have something where you can spend some power when the dark time starts... we hope for headlamps and wellies ;O)))

Well, Nobby, I do hope Gail is none the worse for that flattening out on the pavement! Sounds like Angus might be the better of some additional activity like your agility course to expend some of his excess energy. But I am glad to read that you get a fair proportion of the focus on 'designated' day! Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx

    1. Gail is fine. Angus is strong but not, I would say, especially agile. I've noticed one rarely sees labradors doing dog agility.

  3. I'm sure Angus - and Jim - are very grateful to Gail. I hope Gail is not too bruised. Perhaps Tuesday should be renamed Designated Angus Day, for after all, every day is Nobby Day.

    1. Gail was unscathed, the only damage being to her dignity.

  4. Every day is designated dog day here Nobby! Aren't I a lucky girl?
These last two days we have finally been able to park near to the beach and Carol has taken me for a walk along the promenade! I've seen lots of dogs and can tell you that I am being very good by not barking at them - well, only if they bark first! There is the sea to look at but dogs are not allowed on the beaches here, so we're a bit restricted. I'd love to be able to run free along the sand!
Angus is a lucky boy to have Gail take him for a walk, and I'm sure he'll slow his pace so that Gail doesn't have another fall.
    Love,
    Paca xx.

  5. Next time Angus and Gail go for a walk, Gail will know what to expect!

  6. life has a way of changing when we least expect it. I am thinking a few days of walking with Gail and Angus will learn what he is supposed to do. He weighs about what Beau weighs and the reason I can walk Beau is he walks like a lamb. a dog that size can drag us like a sled. Hope Angus learns the ropes and walks beside not in front.

  7. Oh Nobby I do hope Jim feels better soon and maybe he can join you and Gail and Angus. Angus is a big boy. My neighbor is owned by Jack a Black Lab he is a big boy too but he is about 12 1/2 so not as robust at walking as Angus.
Sending lots of get well wishes to Jim and happy Wednesday to you.

  8. We're sorry to hear that Gail took a tumble on her first walk with Angus. It's good to see that "Designated Dog Day" includes plenty of Nobby time too.

  9. We are glad that your tumble walking Angus caused no harm to you! (Every time our mom falls, she is worried she has broken yet another bone! Yikes!) But we love that Tuesday is an extra special day for dogs, even more special than any other day , right? Does it come with extra special treats perhaps? We hope so!

  10. Parents used to smaller dogs like us are in for a shock when they walk a bigger dog.

  11. We hope Gail is OK and manages to stay on her feet for the remainder of her time with Angus. And Angus had best behave. Enjoy that agility time, Nobby. We wish we could do that too, but our Mom would be on the ground all the time:)

  12. So you can stand at the door and look smug when Gsil returns from walking Angus, Nobby. How did the agility go anyway?

  14. We wish we could do agility...we do jump over the downed tree trunk in our yard, and the downspouts under the eaves...BOL!!

Years ago, the then seven year old neighbor girl took her Lab outside when she got home from school...it was Feb, and very icy...and said dog, yanked the leash out of her hand and was trying to get him back...nope. He wanted to go on a walk about. Petcretary put on her coat and gloves and went out to help...but for her troubles she slipped on some of that ice...and had to miss almost 2 months of work on account of her injured arm...but she did catch that wayward Lab and brought him to his mom...not the little girl. Yikes! (Never saw the girl out with her dog after that...)
