Parklife

"Confidence is a preference for the habitual voyeur
Of what is known as
(Parklife)"

Do you know the song 'Parklife'

Perhaps not - it was a hit for the British group Blur back in 1994. They're a bit of a guilty pleasure for Gail and she sometimes finds herself mouthing the first lines of this particular song on our daily visits to Duthie Park.  She says they could have been written with me in mind.

"Confidence is a preference"? Appropriate to me? Now why would she think that?

Is it the way I greet all the other dogs, big and small, like they're long lost friends, even those I haven't met before?

Is it because I regularly sneak through a gap in the fence and venture into the yard behind the park café where humans and, apparently, dogs are not supposed to go?

Has it got something to to with the fact that once, in this same forbidden back yard I found an unguarded tray of cakes and stole one of them before Gail could pull me away?

Of course I love to disappear into the dense rhododendron shrubbery and am never scared of getting lost.

And I always run over to sniff out the heavy equipment being used by the park maintenance guys (they know me well by now...)

Does it take a confident dog to go and stick his nose in the pail of white paint being used to mark out the boundary of the cricket pitch in summer?

Oh and did I ever mention I like to steal balls from other dogs? (No matter what the size of the dog.)

I leave it to you to answer these important questions regarding my Parklife...

  1. 🤔 F often uses the line about going round and round and round (and the sense of enormous wellbeing) from that same song. Yes, confidence is definitely a useful tool in life's arsenal of resources, Nobby; and it sounds like you have it in spades.

Well, Nobby, I wonder where the line is drawn between confidence and foolhardiness..? Adventurousness and recklessness..? I mean, the hole in that cafe fence is surely a physical representation of all the invisible boundaries you ignore?!! BOL...and tell Gail there is no guilt in musical pleasure! 4. If a tray of cakes is left unattended, it is only to be expected that a passing canine will sample at least one of them.

  5. Nobby, last night we watched Graham Hall's programme "Dogs Behaving Badly". One of the pups (a black Lab) did what you do - pinched other dogs balls and ran off with them. Eventually he was trained to give them back! It took time but it worked, and involved quite a lot of treats too!
Carol is hoping to see how to stop me barking and lunging at dogs we meet on our walks. She doesn't realise some of them deserve a lunge, and would rather we were all friends.
    Love,

  7. since you love your parklife, it is good you do not live in our city. you would be picked up by the local law, and fines would be paid. the reason is we have more dogs per square mile than you do in all of scotland, it would be madness with dogs off leash. our shelters require people who adopt to have a fenced yard for the dogs and they provide off leash dog parks. there is a 3 acre one at Bray Park, but the dogs all run and do what you do and Beau can't run

    1. Gail says: Just to clarify. Our back garden is very secure, bounded by a 5ft granite wall. The gap in the fence is in the park, between the area that's open to humans and dogs, and the 'private' yard behind the park café. Nobby is only allowed off lead in the park (along with plenty of other dogs) first thing in the morning when there are no families or children present. It is true that his behaviour is not always perfect, but he is never aggressive.

  8. Nobby I could tell from day one you are a Confident WFT. Full of spunk and curiosity and 100% sure the words No Nobby really translate to "yes Nobby, go forth follow your nose to where it goes'!!
