Not for the squeamish

Aberdeen City Beach, March 2023

Snow flurries and sun and a trip to the shore,
A perfect chance to exercise one’s Right to Roam,
The tail-wagging pup is now free to explore,
The vast stretch of beach is all his to comb.

White caps on the waves are a-glint in the sun,
There’s pieces of driftwood to closely survey.
Then all of a sudden, and fast, the dog runs,
His nose is alerted, his lithe limbs obey.

The human’s distracted, too late she pays heed,
And cries “come Nobby, COME”, and more loudly again.
But he’s more than her match when he turns on the speed,
And he reaches his goal, all her shouting in vain.

What a glorious prize, what treasure lies here!
What once was a seal is now part-decomposed.
Oh please give the dog a chance to roll and smear
His furs. This scent's much sweeter than a rose…

Happy Nature Friday friends, and once again thanks to our LLB Gang friends for hosting this our favourite blog hop. And readers please be assured that the Aberdeenshire coast is home to a sizeable population of live and healthy seals.

  1. Poor seal, it doesn't look full grown. Did you roll in it Nobby? My human has some big pointy seal teeth that she 'recovered' from a carcass (slightly more gone than that one) on a beach on the Baltic coast. Strange souvenir don't you think? Most people would be looking for amber. Paw smacks Mr T

    1. Gail replies: Thankfully I reached the scene in time to prevent Nobby rolling. Something of a relief as we were on a one-way walk, catching the bus home, and a dog smelling of rotting seal carcass would not have been a popular passenger on the no.17!

  4. Well spotted, Nobby. It's strange that half of the flesh has disappeared. It looks as though it's been neatly sliced away.

  5. When Mom lived on the North Sea Coast in Germany, she used to let the dogs go free too. BUT, then one day Emma took off and closed her ears to any recall. That was the last free romp for her. Katie did the same thing one day and that ended her freedom as well. Hope you got a good roll in on that prize!

  7. Oh Nobby - that wasn't very clever to ignore Gail - you'll really be in the dog house now! (Pun intended!) You looks as though you had that huge beach all to yourselves - lucky you, I think I would have run off too!
    Loved the poem.
    Love,

  9. Nobby Nobby Nobby you are officially a magnificent explorer and have rightly earned the title of Beach Boy.
However, Toto the mighty mini Dachshund, was oblivious to any recall when he his German nose never learned that a quick roll in disgusting scents ended in a very long suds and water at home. And being a mini he was trapped without any escape from the 2' deep tub.

  12. You are the king of the beach. I can only imagine how heavenly the dead seal in the sun for days smelled like.

  14. Wow! What a fun adventure! Great poetry too! We're all science geeks here at our house, so we're aren't squeamish at all. We would be so fascinated to have a chance to examine a former sea creature in that state of disarray. I do hope you didn't roll in it, though, Nobby.
