Apparently it is not the commonly done thing, to have a Christmas Day picnic. At least not if you live in the north of Scotland.
I just can't imagine why it isn't a more popular option.
You get to enjoy a lovely walk through the pine woods on the way to your favourite picnic spot. None of the well-wrapped humans are grumpy from spending all morning in the kitchen fretting about the turkey.
The essential trappings of a civilised Christmas lunch - a table cloth, festive napkins, pigs in blankets, prosecco etc. can easily be carried in a backpack.
It's well known that food eaten outdoors and in good company* always taste better, especially if consumed after a two and a half mile hike.
Of course it is important to check that you leave the picnic spot in the same pristine state as you found it.
So to summarise - our Christmas outing to Glen Tanar was a simply brilliant experience. I didn't even mind that Gail insisted on adding a wee "festive touch" to my harness.

Looks like you had a lovely Christmas in a way that it should be celebrated.
ReplyDeleteOh, what a splendid way to celebrate Christmas! We had a lovely long morning walk in brilliant sunshine. When we got home Carol disappeared into the bedroom and hummed and ha-ed for a while and lots of mutterings about that not being right or not Christmassy! She eventually came out wearing clothes I'd not seen her in before. She settled me down, gave me a whole shop-full of treats, and went out - without me!
ReplyDeleteSo my Christmas Day was spent partly on my own, and I still don't know what all the fuss was about!
Love,
Indy xx
What a grand idea as long as the weather isn't too freezing cold. Love the stone seating!
ReplyDeleteIt is also a well known fact that food eaten outdoors in the middle of winter has no calories. Did you get a pig in a blanket Nobby? Paw smacks Mr T (I'm still waiting for mine....)
ReplyDeletefood and friends and the great outdoors, nothing could be better... love that stone bench that was your table and sitting place. sounds wonderful to me and the sun came out to meet you. YAY

ReplyDeleteWell, Nobby, it may be your first time at it, but this is truly becomig a tradition for Gail and M&J, and long may it be so! I do find myself wondering, however, what contingency is made for either of pelting rain or smothering of snow?!! Here at the Hutch (where outside would have definitely been off the cards, apart from one brief half hour late arvo), it was online family gathering for 'brunch' by proxy (in my case, a toasted scrambly egg sanger with melon and pomegrante side)... then me catching up on Christmas Univeristy Challenge - and doing better than some of the teams! - before making myself mashed tattie and carrot with a fricasee of parsnip, broccoli, vacon and walnuts with gravy and cranberry... mmmmmmmm Oh, and there was a rather tasty brandied mince pie for afters 😋 Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx
It looks like you all had a great time on your walk and picnic. You must have found a friendly hiker to take the group picture or there was a drone in the backpack too. BOL!
ReplyDeleteRest assured, it was a friendly hiker!
DeleteNobby I would absolutely love to attend this festive picnic...what a lovely setting, delish food and superb company. Of course every picnic needs a Terrier on patrol for leftovers too. It was 14 degrees at wake up here on Christmas Day and windy we did not even go outside. BUT guess what we are expecting 70 degrees by this weekend.
ReplyDeleteHugs and Happy Boxing Day

We say do more untraditional things as long as pups are invited! We had a quiet Christmas, just the 4 of us thanks to the storm. Lady neglected us by going for a hike without us . . . . we are jealous you got to go.
ReplyDeleteLee and Phod wishing you a happy holiday season
That sounds perfect to me
ReplyDeleteWe never would have thought about having a picnic at this time of year. I bet everything was extra yummy out in the fresh air. Hope you got to sample the food, Nobby.
ReplyDeleteWe are late to visit, but it looks like you had a wonderful Xmas Day!
