I licked a jellyfish...

It took us (that's Kirsty, Gail and myself) FOREVER to reach the beach at St Cyrus on Wednesday.

I know this is a Nature Friday post and all that, and perhaps I should apologise in advance to blog hop hosts the LLB Gang for saying the following, but really, why would anyone stop for AGES AND AGES identifying every single flower on the path down the cliffs when a glorious, empty and expansive beach, where a puppy is allowed to roam free, lies in wait?

Well eventually, after Gail had taken photos of the scarlet pimpernel, the bellflower, the sea storksbill and the meadow saxifrage (and several other plants not pictured above), we reached the sands.

It didn't take me long to spot something interesting and before spoilsport Gail could sprint over to drag me away I managed a tasty lick of stranded jellyfish.....

A few minutes later as we walked back through the sand dunes I started feeling a bit funny and developed a strong urge to eat the grasses Kirsty was seeking to identify.

When Gail and Kirsty stopped for a picnic and offered me a bowl of water I drank and drank and drank, then vomited a slimy mass of grass onto the otherwise lovely, speedwell-flecked meadow.

Kirsty, a retired vet, attributed my sudden nausea to the jellyfish licking incident and Gail confidently predicted I would throw up again in the car on the way home.

Which I didn't, by the way, and was fine thereafter too.

Oh, Gail is telling me my Nature Friday readers did not come here to learn all about my "misadventures with marine life" (or, as I would prefer to put it, my continuing open-ness to interesting  and novel taste experiences). She is suggesting I post a photo of the  ladybird we saw perched on one of the flowers. So here it is.

Well, Nobby... it seems that you may have more in common with a certain Polish ladydog who lives in France profonde than with your predecessor, the Boffin! At least you didn't end up at the vets on the end of a drip... but please be more attentive to Gail's pleas that you don't just taste everything that is on offer. And, really, there was so much to see and admire on your walk - I am super impressed that you (or at least Gail) got to see a Scarlet Pimpernel!!! Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx

  3. Oh Nobby - you've learned something else to avoid on your walks! You've learned the hard way by your mistake, and won't need to be told not to touch again! At least I hope you won't!
That beach is fabulous. So different from my local which is covered with sun loungers, straw parasols and bright red people slathering themselves with sun lotion. Would you believe it Nobby, but people pay good money to sit there!
Just as a matter of interest - what did the jellyfish taste like?

    Love,
    Inca xx

  5. that beach is what we love most, less people more water and sand. Minus the jellyfish of course. I am so glad it did not sting you but sorry it made you sick. we have big ones in the water at our beaches and when they are in the water I do not even wade with them... it is fantastic to have a retired vet as your walking partner, since you seem to be getting in as much mischief as the wiems in France. well maybe not Quite as much as them. a beutiful place to walk and the flowers are lovely... that is one long trek to get to the sand

  6. Nobby seems you two hiking partners need to get their priorities in order...an empty beach is on the top of the to do list before anything else. Other than the rocks and green vegetation your beach looks almost like out Atlantic Beach. Lovely flat sand. Jellyfish blah...obviously the smell was much better than the taste. Kirsty is a very very handy hiking partner when one has a curious pup. Thank both G & K for the lovely flowers

  7. We're glad your travelling companion, Kirsty, could use her medical knowledge and assure Gail you were not in need of more urgent care than to empty your belly after kissing the jellyfish. Those sure are pretty flowers you found on your walk to the beach.

  8. We have never seen a jelly fish, except for in an aquarium, and know little about them. Glad you're all right, though. We enjoyed seeing all the lovely flowers and you running on the beach.

  13. Oh, dear please don't give kisses or taste tests to jelly fish, Nobby...they are not nice critters...glad all that happened was an upset tummy.

Pretty blooms in that area, but running on the beach...now that is FUN!

  14. Hi sweet Nobby, sorry your eye is bothering you.. let Gail put those drops in, we don't want a vet visit. hugs and POTP coming your way

  15. Nobby!!! YUCK!!! I'm told they are crunchy but suspect they have to be carefully prepared and then slathered in some human sauce creation to arrive at a safe eating experience. It's a great blog title though. It has a certain laissez faire louchness about it. Paw smacks Mr T

  16. Hi young friend, Ojo here! First - I want to run on all that sand with you! Wow! Second - do not lick the jellyfish. Third - do not lick slugs either. Not that I would know from experience. Nope. Ahem.
