So I bet you're looking at the photo Gail took out of our front window yesterday and are thinking "Nobby, what on earth does that have to do with Nature Friday?"
Well let me explain.
The council workers in the hi-vis jackets are digging up the paving stones, and smoothing and relaying the pavement so that pedestrians are not forever tripping up and hurting themselves due to what had become a very uneven surface.
The root cause (pardon the pun) is the trees.
It's quite a dilemma isn't it? You can have a pleasant, nature-friendly tree-lined street, providing shade in the summer, home for the birds and plenty of pee-mail sniffing opportunities.
Or you can have a boring tree-free road where the paving stones do not have to do battle with the tree roots.
Which would you prefer?
Oh and finally, here are a couple of more conventional 'Nature Friday friendly' photos for you to enjoy.
The first was taken by our friend M earlier in the week and shows sunset over Couper's Pond on the western edge of Aberdeen.
And the second was taken by next door neighbour Edith on a late afternoon walk along the River Dee with my 'Thursday girlfriend' Stroma.
Didn't we both pose nicely?
you look so great together... and this little pond is like a magic place... all the good luck for the construction in your area.. we hope it will not take too much time... like our road work .... 3years... sigh...

ReplyDeleteWell Nobby, I must say that this is a top notch post! I enjoyed your repawting of street events (and I vote for trees!), but the guest photos are magical! Hugs and wags YAM-aunty xxx
Nobby all immensely beautiful - even the idea of a smooth pavement AND trees continuing to line the street. I met a WFT at our local park (Argyle Park) and his name was Beau. How is that for a two in one encounter?
ReplyDeleteWe want a photo of NZ Beau!
DeleteTrees, every time. You did pose nicely, Nobby, and Stroma is very sweet, but the Couper's Pond photograph is stunning.
DeleteLovely sunsets in those pictures. Or was the one with you two pups a sunrise?
ReplyDeleteTrees can truly wreak havoc on sidewalks. Maples seem to be notorious for that. I hope that when they are done, no one will have to call an ambulance for a broken ankle from falling...
Gail replies: Both were sunsets. The sun sets early here at this time of year - the picture of Nobby and Stroma must have been taken before 4pm.
DeleteWhat a wonderful activity for you to be supervising on your comfy seating, Nobby, and we love your sunset shots. How beautiful!
ReplyDeleteYes, both of you are posed perfectly and wow and wow again on the pond, the sky and the garden view. I prefer no sidewalks, and walk on the grass and roots. part of Floridas problem is the over paving of what God intended to be nature that catches, captures and uses the trees and plants. OR maybe live in a desert with no trees and no grass and no need for pavement, just slog in the sand..
ReplyDeletejust had a thought, in the old west of USA as in cowboy movies, the sidewalks were wood and built up a couple of steps, to keep from walking in mud. maybe that would be the answer, raised side walks, but then what about the laws about wheelchair access. we humans have ourselves in a fine kettle of fish these days
Nobby this is 187% a purrfect Nature Friday. Trees, birds and sunsets.OMDs..
ReplyDeleteYou better bark out loud to the workers that is against the law to mess with mail delivery and receipt. EVEN PEEMail. I hope by the birds found other housing for the winter.
The sunsets are breathtaking please thank M and Edith. Storma is a most gorgeous Thursday Gal.
Even thou it goes without saying....YOU NOBBY are most handsome.
Please ask your walkers to give head pats to you, hugs to Gail.

Nobby, you have a front seat supervising the rooting out of the hazards along the street. What splendid sunsets! You and Stroma did a first rate "posing nicely."
ReplyDeleteThat is a dilemma, Nobby...We would rather have a tree lined street, we don't mind the "root bumps". Our Mama however, is much fonder of smoothly lined streets(she is not as coordinated as we are).
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful couple of sunset pictures...and a nice looking picture of you and your Thursday gal!

Those sunset shots are amazing!!! And we would like there to be trees too so we can check out all the pee mail. But yes, it is important to keep the peeps from fallling.

You are doing an excellent job snoopervising the sidewalk repair, Nobby. We love your nature pictures and think you and Stroma look great against the setting sun.
ReplyDeleteIn the states we just let the tree roots push up the sidewalk and leave a big hump. It's a lot of fun when you're riding a bike.
ReplyDeleteWe don't have any pavements around here, so the tree roots aren't a problem - they just push up the road surface instead. Some of them become quite big before they are cut down!
ReplyDeleteThat's a lovely photo of you and Stroma - you make a very handsome pair.
Love,
Paca xx
Those sunset pictures are amazing! In our neighborhood, all sorts on construction like that is going on too! Lots of trees coming down, road and sidewalks being rebuilt---in time for winter?
