Pub quiz victory!

I have a question for you regarding fairness.

When one is a hard-working team mascot at a fortnightly pub quiz, and one's four-woman team takes first prize and collects a grand total of £26, is it not fair that some of the prize money should be reserved for special treats in recognition of one's services?

You would have thought the answer obvious, so I hate to tell you that when Gail's team, 'The Indecisives', won the 'Inn at the Park' quiz on Wednesday night, they put all the cash in a special little purse, apparently reserved for buying drinks next time around, and not one penny was placed aside for yours truly...

As for the quiz, let's see how it went:

What did the Team Indecisives know?
  • That Sally Wainwright wrote the TV Series 'Happy Valley'
  • That Chloe Kelly scored the winning goal in the Euro 2022 final.
  • That the author of the play 'The Inspector Calls' was J B Priestley.
  • That Beijing is on the Yellow River
What did Team Indecisives not know?
  • That Eddie Murphy's breakthrough film was 'Coming to America'
  • That there have been 24 Winter Olympics
  • That it was Amy Winehouse who sang 'Stronger Than Me' and not Celine Dion...
You know what? When I heard the ladies agonising about the 'Stronger than Me' answer, I tried so hard to intervene and indicate they should go with Ms Winehouse, but was brusquely pushed away.

Despite this snub, I was a Good Boy throughout, and after enjoying a wee blether with Westie Ollie at the adjacent table ("I'm fifteen you know, but still in good nick, don't you think?" etc.) I settled down quietly at Gail's feet.

Thankfully this week's contest was not decided by a single point (it sometimes is). The team seemed particularly thrilled that they won even though there were no rounds on 'Science and Nature' or 'History', these topics being their strong suits.

Gail was so happy at the result she even allowed me onto her lap for a special victory cuddle.

  1. It does seem a little unfair, but maybe that's the price of you being allowed to participate.

  2. Nobby, as you have learned, there is no accounting for the foibles of the human race! I agree with you, it wouldn't have hurt them to have bought a treat or two for you - even a small bag of something delicious would have been enough. You're lucky that they took you with them. Carol says she wouldn't take me into a pub because I'm too noisy and sure to bark my head off if I saw another dog. Although I adore humans, apparently I am too friendly. How am I to know which humans like to be jumped all over and which ones don't!

  4. Nobby - maths: team of 4 humans at £6 each and one dog £2 balance. That seems fair but what would £2 get you in a pub? I don't even know if that would buy you pork scratchings these days.

  5. I am thinking the mascots treat was the fact he was allowed to go with and not stay home alone... I knew none of those answers, so if i were there, i would be your co-mascot because no one would want me on their team. a fun evening for all of you, including the treatless pup

Well, Nobby... Tigger's Mum beat me to the maths part! But I must say, that victory photo is a beauty and you should be proud enough with that. For now. If the run of good fortune continues, pawhaps the team might reconsider the distribution of winnings... hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx

  8. Nobby,
Now that you are two and have been around to several Pub nights you might need to re-negotiate your team cheer contract.

  9. It sounds like you had a fun night cheering on the team, Nobby. We think you should definitely get your fair share of the winnings in treats though.

  10. We are happy that Gail and her team won...but do think they should have set aside a bit of their winnings for a Nobby treat or 2!

  12. I hate to disagree with a British quiz master at a pub for 48 Hours was Eddie murphy's breakout role.

  13. Oh goodness, Nobby, no treats AGAIN? That's a lovely picture with Gail though and even better than treats in fact. And I have to agree with Ruby Rose, 48 Hours was definitely Eddie Murphy's breakout movie.

  14. Congrats to the team, Nobby!!! Too bad they didn't heed your wisdom about Amy Winehouse. We think the time on Gail's lap was a nice reward for your good behavior, but how nice it would have been to add a bit of a treat too!!!
