So with Gail finally recovered from the horrid virus we have, two days later than planned, joined her friends Janet and Helen for a short sojourn in the Lake District.
Prime Ministers come and go, but the beauty of this mountainous corner of England endures.
On Monday, in glorious sunshine, we walked around Buttermere and up a small craggy hill called Haystacks.
The only blot on the landscape was Gail's insistence on recalling, at tedious length, her last visit to Buttermere, in the famously hot summer of 1976, when she went Youth Hostelling with her friend Kathryn and caught sunstroke.
I would have scampered out of earshot, but unfortunately Gail insisted on keeping me on the lead due to the Herdwick sheep (which she says are pretty) roaming free all over the fells.
We ended the walk with Gail going for what was apparently a nostalgic swim in the Lake, re-enacting a scene from her teenage walking trip. (Of course there was no accompanying nice-not-naughty fox terrier with her on that occasion.)
That water looks cold - if it is possible to convey cold water in a photo.
ReplyDeleteGail replies: in fact, after the long hot summer in England, the lake water was was pleasanty warm. Although perhaps only if your baseline is the temperature of thr River Dee in Aberdeenshire!
Deletewow that was brave to jump in that lake ...it looks a little fresh.... and we are happy that the evil virus is gone and your Gail feels much better
ReplyDeleteThe landscape is so gorgeous and mom know firsthand that climbing rocks and staying upright is not easy.
ReplyDeleteTaht was a lovely walk, Nobby, but the sea looks mighty cold to me! We'll bet that Gail didn't get sunstroke this time!

ReplyDeleteWell, Nobby, being of an age, I too recall that long hot summer of Gail and my youth. Although I was away in Nigeria at the time, our family kept reporting how 'awful and tropical' it all was. The way folk carried on this year you'd think that such hot summers hadn't happened before!
What a lovely walk you all had... I reserve thoughts on the water dipping! Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx
tis a beautiful spot to visit and the views are magnificent. the only way this person would stand on those rocks with the measuring stick, is by using PicMonkey to pop me the picture. brave humans and canine. you are chalking up more and more fun trips. sorry you could not chase those cute sheep
ReplyDeleteWhat a great place for a hike. We're glad to hear Gail is feeling better so you were able to join her friends for a vacation.
ReplyDeleteHip Hip Hooray!! Gail is well!! Now Nobby can get on with adventures.
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy you 2 were able to join Janet and Helen. I bet they were both very excited to meet you. BOL BOL
Gail's swim looks very refreshing and cool. We had mid 90's yesterday with feels like temp of 100. I'm so over Summer
Hugs Cecilia
In the not-so-hot summer of 1976, we were on our way from San Francisco (Palo Alto, really) to Yellowknife, NWT. Exploring is always the best!
ReplyDeleteI remember 1976! We were visiting our relatives in Germany in July. There was a drought and a heat wave that made the Rivers run low. But we drove to The Alps and enjoyed some cool temperatures near the mountain tops.
ReplyDeleteWe're glad your mum is feeling better. We hope you swam out to rescue her from that lake, Nobby!
Nobby replies: I tried, but was sent back to shore!
DeleteSuch a beautiful walk and wonderful memories!
ReplyDeleteI love how some things, like your view of the lake, never changes, despite all the changes that go on around it.
ReplyDeleteNobby, you got to see where your Mom walked in the past....could you still smell her footprints?? Tee-hee!
ReplyDeleteA lovely place indeed, and a great way to celebrate being well again, Miss Gail!
Hi young friend, Ojo here! Could you still smell where your person had walked so long ago? Also your snout is getting very long and handsome!
